Controlled – Environment Agriculture (CEA) Is the Future of the Industry: Insights From HortiTech Ukraine 2026

Controlled – Environment Agriculture (CEA) Is the Future of the Industry: Insights From HortiTech Ukraine 2026

The International Berry Scientific and Practical Conference took place on 25–27 February 2026 in Ternopil, at the Garden Hall Hotel, under a new and vibrant name: “HortiTech Ukraine 2026. Horticulture. Vegetables. Berries.” The conference was organized by the media group Technologies and Innovations, publisher of the well-known professional journals Berry- Field, Horticulture, and Vegetable Growing. Technologies and Innovations, and Drinks & Beer. Technologies and Innovations.

This year, around 450 leading representatives of the berry, vegetable, and horticultural sectors took part in HortiTech Ukraine 2026, including companies from the technology sector, processors, exporters, and researchers from all regions of Ukraine — from Zakarpattia to Kharkiv and Vinnytsia.

One of the key themes of the event was under-cover cultivation, including various types of greenhouses, high tunnels, multi- and mono-span structures, frost-protection and rain-protection systems, as well as integrated solutions for orchards, berry plantations, and vegetable crops.

On 26 February, the main conference took place with the participation of international and Ukrainian experts and practitioners, alongside an exhibition showcasing modern technologies for horticulture, vegetable production, and processing.

On 25 February, as part of the event, the Berry & Fruit Academy lecture day was held. Nearly 100 participants took part in training sessions led by leading international experts.

HortiTech Ukraine 2026 was held under the auspices of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, with the support of the Ternopil Regional Military Administration.

The Main Technology Partner of HortiTech Ukraine – EFT Group.

The Main Legal Partner – IP & Law firm Pakharenko & Partners.

The Main Organizational Partner of the conference – UKRSADVYNPROM Public Union.

The Main Industry Partner – the Association “Ukrainian Blueberry Growers”.

The Main Wine Partner of the event – KRITSKI WINERY, while the Wine Partner of the Berry & Fruit Academy – GIGI Winery.

The opening of the International Scientific and Practical Conference “HortiTech Ukraine 2026: Horticulture, Vegetables, Berries” began with a welcoming speech by the founders of the media group Technologies and Innovations and the event organizers, Kateryna Koneva and Nadiia Yashchuk. In their speech, they welcomed the participants and partners of the conference and expressed their gratitude for the support and trust in an initiative aimed at developing the berry and vegetable sector and implementing innovative technologies in production and processing.

“The topic of this conference is extremely relevant. We realized this three years ago when we first launched a project dedicated to greenhouse farming and cultivation under cover. That was when the first conference of this format took place. Today we are holding it for the third time and once again confirming that controlled-environment cultivation is one of the key trends in modern agriculture. In open-field production, growers do not have full control over how many nutrients the plant actually absorbs. Fertilizers are applied at a specific rate, but the real level of nutrient uptake remains unknown. As a result, the outcome is often unpredictable. In addition, crop yields are significantly influenced by weather conditions — rain, hail, snow, frost, wind and other risks. Cultivation under controlled conditions and protective cover makes it possible to minimize these risks and ensure more predictable results. That is why we are convinced that this direction represents the future of the industry,” notes Kateryna Koneva.

“The relevance of the topic is also reflected in the scale of the event: this year the conference brings together 450 participants, more than 50 partners are taking part in the exhibition, the program includes 30 speakers, and five discussion panels are being held. We see a high level of interest and active professional interaction. This is already the 47th conference we have organized since 2016.

Katryna Koneva emphasized that the topics of the events cover the areas of our specialized publications — ‘Berry Field’, ‘Horticulture and Vegetable Growing’, and ‘Drinks/Beer’. The main idea is to bring together in an offline format our readers, the protagonists of our publications, and our partners — companies that develop and implement technologies. Together we work on strengthening the technological potential of Ukraine’s agricultural sector and its integration into the international environment.”

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Ukrainian Horticultural Public Union “UKRSADVYNPROM,” Volodymyr Pechko, Chairman of the Union and the conference’s Chief Organizational Partner, presented the development path of uniting, highlighting its key achievements over the years and outlining prospects and forecasts for the future of the industry. The UKRSADVYNPROM Public Union brings together around 200 producers of fruits, berries, nuts and grapes, as well as processing companies and research institutions. Members of the association actively participate in industry events and export their products to markets across all continents, building a reputation as reliable partners. The organization also facilitates the conclusion of export contracts, helps consolidate large product volumes, and supports investment in processing facilities and cold storage infrastructure.

Controlled- environment agriculture (CEA): investments, risks and the efficiency of greenhouse business

The conference program included five thematic panels, covering key areas in the development of modern horticulture, vegetable production and berry growing.

The first panel was dedicated to controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) and market dynamics as the foundation of a modern greenhouse business strategy.

Controlled- environment agriculture (CEA) as a new reality of current agribusiness was presented by Mykola Teteruk, head of the agricultural advisory service AgroCare / Green Agro Solutions, focusing on the opportunities of controlled cultivation and its role in ensuring the stability and efficiency of production:

“CEA is not only greenhouses. It is a risk control system: growing environment, yield, product quality and business predictability. We are talking about controlling light, air and soil temperature, humidity, nutrition and phytosanitary conditions. This is not an alternative to open ground, but a different model and philosophy of production, where the main value is stability, not hit the record. Without systematic risk management, CEA does not work, and the greenhouse itself does not mean automatic profit. In conditions of climate instability, military risks, logistical restrictions and import dependence, the demand for the predicted volume of products is growing. In 2026–2030, the winner will be not who grows more, but the one who will sign a contract. CEA is local production, less dependence on imports, jobs in the regions and stable supply out of season. At the same time, such a model makes sense near large cities, in the format of contract production, for specific crops and high harvest per square meter. However it cannot work without well-established sales channels, a well-thought- out energy model, and an integrated plant protection system. The more controlled the environment becomes, the faster management mistakes tend to scale.“

Practical experience in organizing work in berry plantations and orchards- from receiving a grant to achieving monthly profitability – was shared by Anna Kazik, a practicing agronomist in horticulture and berry growing at Tandem-Agro farm.

Modern greenhouses and energy-efficient solutions for professional cultivation

During the second panel, speakers discussed modern greenhouse designs, construction  materials, and energy solutions.

Feedback from a participant of the HortiTech Ukraine 2026 conference business tour

We, farm LEO AGRO 2022, have been growing strawberries for about ten years. This season will be our second in large-scale cultivation: currently the planting area is one hectare, mainly early and medium varieties – Rumba, Jolie, as well as added Marmelada and Letitia. In greenhouses measuring 9 × 30 meters, we plan to plant remontant varieties Anya and Murano. I learned about the conference from social networks, because I follow the activities of other gardeners and berry growers. We were presented on the second day, February 26, and today we are visiting the business tour on February 27 to get acquainted with the processing and freezing of products. Yesterday I spent the whole day in the lecture hall. The information was extremely useful; I managed to gain a lot of practical knowledge. I especially remembered the speech of Mykola Teteruk, head of the agricultural advisory service AgroCare/Green Agro Solutions, who spoke in detail about market analysis, goal setting, and implementation of business plans. It was also interesting to learn about the experience of colleagues from abroad. In particular, Jeremy Darby from the UK shared practical aspects of growing strawberries in unheated greenhouses. The presentations were accompanied by slides and videos, which made the material clear and understandable. Today, during the business tour, we have the opportunity to see in practice how the production and processing of berries is organized. This allows us to better understand the processes and evaluate ways to implement such solutions in our farm. In general, participation in the conference and business tour was very useful and inspiring for the further development of our business,” — Oksana Chorna, Deputy Head of the farm LEO AGRO 2022.

February 25 — Berry Fruit Academy

“Refreshing the Farm 2026: Marginal Crops and Working Models”

On the eve of the HortiTech Ukraine 2026 conference, a practical training intensive was held as part of the Berry Fruit Academy – a school of knowledge that brings harvest. During the first block, dedicated to strawberries and raspberries, international berry consultant Iryna Kobrynets spoke about whether these crops are truly a marginal business or is it just an illusion of high profitability. “We analyzed the work of berry growers over the past seasons in order to avoid or minimize mistakes in the future. And this is not only about the coming year, but the work in this area overall. We talked about what needs to be paid attention to when establishing production, diversification, and making management decisions at the stage of creating an enterprise. Many of those present saw these mistakes in themselves, some have even already corrected them, or will work on them in the future. I am convinced that such work and technological production can ensure the future success of an agricultural enterprise,” noted Iryna Kobrynets.

The topic “Apple: an orchard as a business operation” was revealed by agricultural consultant, master of plant growing and agricultural management Anna Sakhonchyk.

In the block about greenhouse vegetables in 2026 – cucumber, cherry tomato, pepper, greens – a practical expert in modern agricultural technologies Olena Boltovska focused on production controllability.

At the end of the day, the experts, together with the participants, analyzed what they heard and discussed real scenarios for the development of farms in 2026.

During the event, a presentation and tasting of Ukrainian wines by GIGI winery – the Wine Partner of the event – took place.
